A Cracker Trip

A Cracker Trip

On my recent trip to Wavecrest Hotel in the Transkei I was fishing mostly with paddletails, but I spent a bit of time fishing with bait as well. My Dad, at the age of 81, is a bait fisherman, who loves targeting edibles from the rocks. Standing next to him on the rocks waiting for a bite gave us plenty of time to chat, and amongst the various wisdoms imparted, he told me how much […]

Transkei Paddletail in the surf

Transkei Paddletail in the surf

I have just returned from a magical trip to Wavecrest hotel in the Transkei, where I spent some time casting paddletails for kob in the surf and had some good success when conditions were right. I also learnt a bit, as I do every time I fish, and a few more pieces of the kob spinning puzzle fell into place. Conditions weren’t on our side when we first arrived and for the first few days […]

Catching Breede grunter on live mudprawn

Catching Breede grunter on live mudprawn

Breede Grunter on Lure

Breede Grunter on Lure

I just got back from a trip down to the Breede river in the Western Cape. I went to target spotted grunter on surface lure, as it would be my last chance to do so before summer ends and the grunter fishing slows down.   We were there over a neap tide, which was a first for me. The water was very warm and clean. It measured around 24 degrees on the fish finder every […]

The Pause and the Lure

The Pause and the Lure

The Twitch And The Pause. The pause is one of the most important tools in a lure angler’s box of tricks. A lure stopped, whether on the surface, on the bottom, or hanging suspended, is often inhaled. If not on the pause, then often as it moves again. This is the reasons why the fly (salt) is so effective. It stops dead on the pause, is virtually weightless, so it hangs tantalizingly in the zone […]
