Finding Your Flies

Let the fish find your fly is advice that only after chasing too many trout have I begun to truly appreciate.

The problem is that when you see any fish moving, the temptation to pick up and throw your line in their path is too tempting.

The dilemma being that when you see lots of trout activity in every direction, you spend more time with your fly in the air than the water and the thrashing of fly line generally does more harm than good.

Clarity and subsequent visibility only compounds the issue.

The trout were around this last weekend, but seemed to be more interested in fornicating than feeding by all accounts That said, 361 Trout succumbed over this the last of the qualifying legs of the TOPS at SPAR Corporate Trophy Challenge, bring the total to 1173 fish caught and released before the grand final.

The weather was reasonably stable despite the pre frontal pressure threatening and the entrants were comparably tame to the festivities of the last leg…..although so was the Rio carnival!

The legendary Notties pub never fails to keep everyone entertained and provide ammunition for the WildFly Choice Awards. Some memorable chirps earned the Endangered Wildlife Trust needed donations, one bright angler being fined for asking, whilst looking over his dam, ‘Where’s the deep end?’

There were a number of notable Rainbow Trout flirting around the 7 pound mark, with Ivo De Azevedo, a brand new convert to the sport on his first outing, netting the biggest of 61cm.
