Without the first frost of the season, you never really know how the Winter trout are going to react. Are the fish going to still be feeding and hence eating patterns that mimic what is to be found in the water or have they switched to bright attractors, taking the offering out of sheer spawning aggression?
Every year it seems to move a few days forward, to the extent that ‘Jack’ only paid a visit the first week in June this year, but since then he has been a regular every morning much to the dismay of us soft festive fly fishers who don’t relish that crack or should I say lack of Dawn.
The TOPS Corporate Challenge kicked of this last weekend and the lads took making Party SA’s official 12th language to heart. With a brand new Jeep Wrangler up for grabs, as well as a Yamaha Ski Boat and a multitude of international fly fishing holidays from WildFly Travel, their was also some application on the field.
A total of 415 were caught and released in the WildFly waters over four sessions, averaging 7 fish per angler, with the unique handicap scoring system of 4, 3, 2, 1 diminishing fish counting per session, keeping most of the teams in it until the eleventh hour.
The ‘Paarl Media KZN’ team eventually took the TOPS title for the first leg, with Sven turner from the ‘Notties Nutters’ earning the best fly fisher accolade and Clinton Savage from team ‘Starfish’ landing a beauty of 61cm estimated at about 7 pounds, being the largest Rainbow Trout of the weekend.
As usual the WildFly choice awards kept all entertained at prize giving with more prizes being awarded for the party antics off the field than fish actually caught.
